Who Can Apply for a First-Time Central Heating Grant?

So the question is about eligibility and the simplest answer is “households with low income and low energy efficiency should apply”. Now we need to know how authorities determine the low-income and low efficiency criteria, and how vulnerable you should be to qualify.

We will try to find all the answers to these questions in this article. We will also be looking at what measures are covered under first-time central heating grants, and how you can qualify and apply. First off, let’s start with knowing the nitty-gritty of these grants.

What Are the First Time Central Heating Grants?

First-time central heating grants operate under government schemes like the ECO4. These grants install entire heating systems including boilers (heat pumps if no gas connection), radiators, control systems, and pipework.

The FTCH (we will refer to first-time central heating as FTCH) grants runs with a whole-house approach. That means if your property requires insulation or other measures for energy efficiency, you can get that too under the main ECO4 scheme

To allocate the FTCH grants, Ofgem has set eligibility criteria to ensure those in more need get them first.

Setting the qualifying criteria ensures that only targeted households apply and the volume of applications remains manageable. Plus, it also helps Ofgem determine households facing cold weather or bad health vulnerabilities and low property energy efficiency.

Who Can Apply for a First Time Central Heating Grant?

To explain the qualifying criteria, let me tell you a story of two households. One of those houses met the requirements perfectly, while the other one initially failed but qualified through ECO flex (ECO flex allows local authorities to refer households for energy efficiency measures even if they do not meet criteria. We’ll explain how later in this article).

Let’s see how the first home was able to meet the requirements perfectly.

  1. The household income for the first house was below £31,000 annually (as per the requirements)
  2. The EPC rating for the property was ‘E’ (requirement is EPC D, E, F, or G)
  3. The property had not had a central heating system installed previously. (using alternatives like solid fossil fuels and room heaters)
  4. The applicant was a tenant and had formal permission from the landlord for upgrades. (Homeowners and landlords can also apply though)

Important Note: If you are receiving qualified benefits like working tax credit, pension credit, or universal credit, you can directly qualify for free first time central heating grants. (no income threshold requirements) However, your property needs to meet the energy efficiency requirements specified above.

What If I Don’t Qualify for Criteria?

Well, that’s a valid question. Here comes the story of the second home, who didn’t qualify first. So, the matter was, that the applicant was a homeowner and was not receiving qualifying benefits, and the income threshold was also not met.

Now, you might be thinking, how can they even qualify? They were also thinking the same, but guess what? They were living in fuel poverty and their energy bills were much higher as compared to their income. So, they contacted the local council and Bingo, who qualified through ECO Flex.

How Can You Apply for First Time Central Heating Grants

The application process for the FTCH rants is very simple. First, you need to decide whether you want to apply through local councils or an approved installer. In case you choose to go with the local council, you will be required to handle everything yourself. However, the local installer will apply on your behalf and handle everything themselves (without additional charges).

So, we recommend going with a verified installer like ECO Energy Services. After you contact one, here is the process you will need to follow.

  1. Check the Eligibility through the Installer’s website (calculator is provided by the installer)
  2. Provide the requested details and documentation. (includes ownership proof, tenancy certificate, income proof, and benefits receipt (if applicable).
  3. Your house will be surveyed for energy efficiency assessment and recommendations for measures.
  4. Once the application is approved, the safe gas installer will install your first-time central heating system.
